2017 HEALTHY SKIN AWARDS
The 2017 Healthy Skin Awards were announced at a special awards night on Thursday, 25 May 2017.
This event celebrated individuals and organisations who support and encourage healthy skin practices in the community and within their organisation.
The Skin & Cancer Foundation Inc has been running the Healthy Skin Awards since 2010 – this is the 8th year that we have been conducting the Awards. The Healthy Skin Awards are a quite valuable way of contributing to public health.
They are an intrinsic part of the Foundation’s public education program that raises the community’s awareness of the importance of skin health, and how individuals and organisations can make a big difference in their own communities, whether they be a sporting group, a community organisation, improving the wellbeing of their staff, or advocating on behalf of a special interest group.
There are some who are making quite a considerable difference, and these Awards recognise those individuals and organisations.
Congratulations to the winners of the 2017 Healthy Skin Awards:
- Jo Mohan - for excellence in the promotion of skin health in the community.
- IRESS Ltd - for excellence in the promotion of skin health in the workplace.
- Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority - for excellence in the promotion of skin health in the workplace.

The 2017 Healthy Skin Award Winners
Jo established Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis Australia in May 2010 as a Facebook community for sufferers and their family and friends who were seeking support in living with Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis. Not only do patients with Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis have to struggle with the physical symptoms, but also the social stigma associated with the disease. Jo has worked tirelessly educating the community through social media, webinars and education sessions about patient care, treatments and lifestyle impacts. Through Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis Australia, Jo has made a positive social impact with large and diverse groups in our society.
IRESS is a global financial services tech company based here in Australia. It has operations across Australia, Asia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and the UK. They have won this Healthy Skin Award for demonstrating their commitment to the wellbeing of their people, through their corporate skin check program. IRESS understands their employees are the key to their success and therefore offer many benefits to support their employees. Corporate skin checks are one such benefit which has proved to be very popular. They recently screened nearly 170 staff in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. It was, by far, the largest exercise by any one particular company in Australia, and demonstrates the genuine interest that IRESS has in the wellbeing of their staff.
GREat barrier reef marine park authority
The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority is a well-deserved winner of this Healthy Skin Award. Their fundamental obligation is to protect the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, and the World Heritage Area - however is also pleased the judges to read about their efforts to also protect the skin health of their employees. With a large proportion of their staff working outdoors, and with North Queensland having one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, the Authority actively promotes skin checks and provides personal protective equipment for their employees. Queensland's UV Index is 3 or higher all year round. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority clearly recognises the importance of skin health for their employees who work in their beautiful, but high UV environment.
WHITEHORSE CITY COUNCIL
Whitehorse City Council was awarded a Healthy Skin Award for their efforts to help protect and improve the skin health of their employees. With many of their 1,400 employees working outdoors in parks and gardens, city works, and child care centres, the judges were impressed that the Council had developed and implemented strategies to protect the skin health of their workers. The Council offers employees annual skin checks with many employees being referred for further investigation. Employees are also provided with an extensive range of personal protective clothing. The Council also hosts education sessions about the importance of skin health, the various types of skin cancer, signs and symptoms, treatments, prevention, and tips to live a healthy lifestyle.
