Adults and children who suffer socially and
psychologically from appearance altering conditions can now benefit from new
services offered at the Skin & Cancer Foundation Inc.
Psychologist, Sebastiana Biondo, now offers a
psychological and support service for individual (adults & children) that
suffer from conditions that include hair loss, trichotillomania, vitiligo,
psoriasis, and skin cancers at the Foundation.
These individuals are usually healthy. However, their
condition significantly affects their quality of life and psychological
The issues that are generally addressed include anxiety,
depression, self-esteem, social isolation, relationships, shame &
embarrassment, and work. Some individuals may become clinically depressed and
express suicidal ideation and require both antidepressants and psychotherapy to
help them improve.
Professionals working with individuals suffering from
appearance altering conditions need to be sensitive to their emotional status
and can incorporate counselling in meeting their patient's care management.
