These individuals are usually healthy. However, their condition significantly affects their quality of life and psychological well-being.

The issues that are generally addressed include anxiety, depression, self-esteem, social isolation, relationships, shame & embarrassment, and work. Some individuals may become clinically depressed and express suicidal ideation and require both antidepressants and psychotherapy to help them improve.

Professionals working with individuals suffering from appearance altering conditions need to be sensitive to their emotional status and can incorporate counselling in meeting their patient's care management.
